Variegated Ribbon Grass (Phalaris arundinacea) ‘Picta’ add a smash of color as a ground cover with 3 foot high cascading leaf blades. Ribbon Grass is often used as a ground cover in tough sites where nothing else seems to grow. Ribbon Grass spreads quickly by rhizomes to form a dense mat which can be used to solve erosion problems. Tolerant of a wide range of soil types from dry, to moist, to wet and sites from sun to shade. This ornamental grass has the reputation for being invasive, however I find the roots to be fairly shallow and not difficult to keep in bounds. When planted in a dry shady area, plants tend not be be as aggressive and better behaved.
I love the way the leaves flow and add that special variegated splash of color to my garden and in flower pots. Flowers are white and spring up in early summer. Cut foliage back late summer for a fresh burst of variegated color. Hardy in zones 4 – 9, Ribbon Grass is deer resistant and drought tolerant.
