S Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’

Artemisia ‘Powis Castle” is a hybridized, woody-based perinneal that adds that extra special silver contrast to the  garden.   Also known as mugwort or wormwood.  I have planted Artemisia  throughout my beds which adds a striking flow of silver grey accent.  The silver tones complement other perennials and ties together diverse colors within the garden.  Planted next to white or blue flowers can be stunning – such plants as Salvia, Veronica, or Russian Sage.

Powis Castle Artemisia is perfect for dry landscape areas, herb garden, sunny borders, rock gardens, or containers.  Artemisia prefers full sun and hot conditions.  (The ones I grew in the shade became lanky and stayed small.)  Artemesia forms a low, neat mound with a height of 2 feet and width of 3 feet.  Foliage has a soft feathery look that just asks to be touched.  A  very low maintenance plant in addition to being drought tolerant and deer resistant.

If the plant spreads more than you like, prune back by 1/2 to 1/3 during summer months.  Do not prune in the fall as the outer branches will wilt down after a heavy frost.  The wilted foliage protects the core of the plant throughout the cold weather and come spring, you will see new silver buds/ foliage appearing at the base along the wilted branches.  Prune wilted branches back at this time to allow for spring growth.   Hardy in zones 6 – 9.
