A dense, compact evergreen shrub with yellow/green leaves all summer that turn a brilliant fire red in the fall and lasting throughout the winter. Nandina Firepower starts to change leaf color as the temperatures begin to cool, bringing a striking bright red color to your landscape.
Plant in partial to full sun for best color and growth. You will find Nandina to be a low maintenance bush requiring very little care and no pruning. Nandina is often called ‘Heavenly Bamboo” due to its striking lacy foliage which resembles bamboo. However not to worry as Nandina is not a member of the spreading bamboo family. Stems emerge right from the base of the plant. forming a compact shrub. Hardy in zones 6 and up, they have a medium growth rate and range in size from 24 – 36 inches tall and wide.
Nandina can be used in virtually any part of your landscape. Groupings of three to five plants add color and looks great when combined with other evergreens that have different leaf textures such as yews, junipers or cypress. When planting in groups, plan to space them around 2 feet apart.
Nandina is popular in Japanese gardens and often found near the front or back door as it is considered the ‘friendship plant’.
