Want a dramatic burst of color first thing in spring?  If the answer is yes, then you need a Forsythia bush as it will be one of the first things to bloom each spring.  Your Forsythia bush will announce the return of spring with sunny splashes of bright yellow flowers that completely cover the bush.  In late winter, cut some stems as the buds are just starting to swell. Bring them indoors to force early blooms and brighten your home with cheerful color.

Lynwood Gold  (Forsythia x intermedia) is a symmetrical shrub that grows up to 10 feet tall and wide but can easily be pruned to desired size. After the flowers fade, the foliage remains a chartreuse/gold color.  It is a low maintenance, long lived plant that is also deer resistant.  Grows hardily in zones 4 – 9 and prefers full sun to part sun.

Plant Forsythia as a privacy hedge or on a slope for erosion control.   If planting as a hedge, space 3 or 4 feet apart. Forsythia is often planted as an accent plant to show off its stunning spring color.   Be sure you give it plenty of room to grow.  Pruning should be a thinning out of the older branches at the base of the plant, allowing the more vigorous branches to take over. Pruning should be done after flowering so next years buds have time to develop.
