Also known as Beard-tongue, Penstemon Digitalis is a hardy perennial that is loved for their striking red/maroon foliage and tall red-stemmed white flowers. ‘Husker Red’ is an improved variety proven to tolerate wet winters and hot, humid summers. The garnet red foliage appear in spring, followed in late spring and early summer by 3-foot-high red stems with small white trumpet-shaped flowers with red stamens. A North American native.

This particular variety of Penstemon is known for its incredible dark foliage. ‘Blackbeard’ Penstemon will form a mound of rich eggplant color purple leaves that provide great color all season. Lilac purple flowers erupt on dark purple stems . The strong stems stay upright all summer. The purple flower have a white tubular center that hummingbirds love.

Disease and drought tolerant, plant this perennial in average, well draining soil in full sun. Use as a border plant, cut flower or for naturalizing. Hardy zones 3-8

This low maintenance perennial grows to a height and width of 1 to 3 feet. Plant in full sun to light shade in average, well-drained soil. Plant in groups for a dramatic sweep of color. To propagate, plants can be divided in spring or by seeds started indoors at 55-64 F. ‘Husker Red’ was the Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year in 1996. Hardy in zones 3-8
