Weigela florida ‘Java Red’ is a deciduous flowering shrub with fountain like arching branches showing off lush purple/ red tinted leaves. Java Red Weigela are known and loved for their tubular blossoms that cover the shrub from spring to early summer. The buds start off as a deep red and open into lavender-red funnel shaped blooms. I have heard it call a “blooming machine” as the blooms are profuse.
A backbone to any garden is flowering shrubs such as the weigela, chosen for its foliage as much as for its blooms. Hummingbirds love the fragrant rich pink/red tubular flowers that cover the shrub from spring to early summer. Java Red Weigela shrubs are perfect as a flowering hedge, mixed border, hummingbird or fountain garden.
A hardy, easy to grow flowering shrub and a prefers full sun to partial shade and is hardy in zones 4 to 8. It is also drought tolerant once established. Java Red Weigela is often called “Old Fashioned Weigela” as it is one of the oldest of the cultivars. Java Red is a dwarf variety reaching only four feet allowing for a compact form that requires less maintenance than the other larger weigela varieties on the market.
Weigela bushes are best if pruned after flowering to maintain desired size and shape. Easy to grow requiring little maintenance. Weigela is pronounce wy-GEE-la and is a woody relative on the honeysuckle.
