Feathertop Grass Pennisetum villosum – A dramatic ornamental grass with bottlebrush plumes that contrast with trailing clumps of narrow green foliage. Winning the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2002, this Feathertop Grass is loved for its pretty, white plumes and attractive foliage. Nodding silver panicles are produced in great profusion from late summer through early fall. The plumes also work well as dried flowers. A warm season grass that grow 1.5 to 2 feet tall and is drought tolerant.
Cover the base with mulch in cooler climates through the winter and cut foliage back in late winter/early spring. It is a hardy perennial in warmer climates but should be treated as an annual in cooler climates. I have had these for years in my zone 6b/7 garden and they come back every year even though reported hardy in zones 8 – 10. Feathertop Grass is very versatile and can be used as a specimen plant, in groups or en mass. It adds texture and color in borders or containers. A beautiful and graceful ornamental grass!
