Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a popular perennial due to its hardiness, upright form, and striking pink blooms in the fall. Sedum Autumn Joy grows in substantial clumps of light green stems and foliage which support large flower heads. The flower heads develop during summer and explode into a deep pink bloom in the fall. Just when other plants are loosing their color, Sedum Autumn Joy is bursting with sunshine adding life and color to your garden. Leave the flower heads alone and they will turn bronze adding winter interest and food for the birds. Trim the stems to the ground in the Spring when new growth appears at the base. Divide every few years for additional plants and to enhance the health of the plant.
Sedum plants are also a succulent where the leaves and stems hold water, making them very drought resistant. They prefer full sun and will tolerates poor soil but not soil that stays wet. They grow up to 24 inches tall and spread 18 – 24 inches wide. Hardy in zones 3 – 9. Butterflies like the large pink blooms
Bright pink flower clusters are made up of small star-shaped flowers crowded together to form a flat, circular bloom that can be up to 6 inches wide. Leaves are a smooth blue- gray color, succulent and pointed. Propagate by cutting and root division.
Sedum Autumn Joy can be used in many different ways in your flower bed. Because of their upright habit, they often take the place of shrubs. Other uses include cottage or formal gardens, rock gardens or containers. A beautiful plant for any landscape. I enjoy the fall color and how they are absolutely no care – even if you forget to water. That is my kind of plant!
