Oregano
That popular herb loved for the added flavor it gives to pizza sauces and Mediterranean dishes. A member of the mint family, this flavorful herb has a strong, pungent peppery taste. There are many uses for oregano in the kitchen such as in Mediterranean cuisine, soups and stews, on chicken, lamb and in vinegars. . Not only does oregano provide flavoring for foods, it is also known to have many health advantages including potent antioxidants and anti-bacterial properties.
Harvest the oregano leaves as you need them. The most flavor-filled leaves are found right before the flowers bloom. Leaves can be used fresh or frozen for use during the winter.
Oregano leaves store well fresh when refrigerated in a plastic bag, or dried and placed in an airtight container. Oregano leaves are stronger dried than when fresh.
Oregano is a spreading perennial with small, rounded green leaves and miniature purple blossoms. Perfect for growing in your vegetable garden, in herb gardens or in containers. When planted in containers, they like to spill over the sides making them fun and attractive. Oregano’s low growing habit often makes it an attractive edging along a path or as a seasonal ground cover.
Grows to about 1 to 2 feet tall and spread around 18 inches it makes a good companion for any vegetables in the garden. Plant in full sun after danger of frost has passed. Trim and harvest often for continued new growth and shaping.
