Maiden Grass Miscanthus sinensis – is an outstanding ornamental grass valued for its foliage and purple tinged plumes that rise above the tall grass each fall. Maiden Grass forms dense clumps that may be tall and narrow or fountain-shaped. The flowers emerge as drooping purple-tinged fans, then open to long, silky plumes in late summer. Leave the foliage all winter for architectural interest. Cut back to the ground in late winter or early spring before new green growth emerges.
‘Gracillimus’ Maiden grass prefers full sun and will flop in shade. It thrives in moderate to wet conditions and is drought tolerant. Allow 4-5 feet between plants which will grow 3 to 7 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Divide plants as they outgrow their boundaries. Cut them back in early spring. They are noted to be pest free and hardy in planting zones 4-8.
Ornamental grasses look good in a garden all their own, they also work well as accent plants in mixed perennial border. Gardeners today find many uses for this graceful grass – as borders, backgrounds, hedges, as well as in large decorative containers.
