Hydrangea quercifolia – Oakleaf Hydrangea ‘Ruby Slippers’ is a popular variety due to its compact size of 3-4 feet tall and wide and beautiful upright ruby rose color flowers. This dwarf oakleaf hydrangea boasts large white summer panicle that quickly turn pale pink to ruby red. The striking blooms are held upright on strong stems with coarse oak leaf shaped green foliage. In fall, the leaves transition to a striking mahogany-red. Blooms turn brownish/red and remain on the bush all winter. Stems exfoliate each winter to reveal a brown inner bark.
The compactness and smaller size of this wonderful shrub make it perfect as an accent specimen near homes or patios. Great for shrub borders or grouped in open woodland areas. Good for small garden spaces and containers.
Plant in full sun to part shade for best color. Blooms June through July but blooms remain on shrub all winter. Low maintenance and ease of care with no serious insect or disease problems. Medium water needs.
