Horsetail (Equisetum spp.) is a water-loving North American native perennial that is often found growing wild on pond banks and in river bottoms. It grows upright as slender green spears that look similar to bamboo with jointed segments. Horsetails prefer to grow in wet areas or even in sandy or clay soil if kept moist.
Horsetail grass grows upright to about 3-4 ft tall with slender bare stalks. When planting horsetail, choose your area carefully as it can be aggressive as it spreads by underground rhizomes. If spreading is not an issue, horsetail can be planted and allowed to spread as a vegetative hedge or tall groundcover.
For a dramatic statement, plant horsetail reed grass in pots, planters or troughs. Popular around pools and patios as they give off an oriental look. Perfect for a bog garden or water feature.
Horsetail grass prefers part sun to full sun. Once established they tolerate periods of drought. In areas with light frost, horsetail stays green year round. Only maintenance is to remove dead or brown stalks early spring.
