Purple Palace Heuchera
Heuchera micrantha ‘Purple Palace’ (CoralBells) – With the advent of ‘Purple Palace’ with its wrinkled purple leaves, something call heucheramania began and is spreading! “Purple Palace’ won Perennial Plant of the Year in 1991. Heuchera ‘Purple Palace’ is a mounding perennial that grows 1 – 2 feet tall and wide with dark purple rounded heart shaped leaves to 4 inches long with toothed, rounded lobes above and beet-red beneath. Wiry, graceful spikes of tiny pink bell shaped flowers appear from late spring to late summer.
These gorgeous plants are lovely in a border or when planted among rocks, on rock walls, and in rock gardens with their purple color providing a great contrast. Due to their small height, they work well in front of borders, as groundcover, as edging, in containers, as well as for cut flowers. The airiness of the tiny flowers on tall stems provides texture to the garden and bouquets.
In zone 6a where our summers are hot, I plant Heuchera plants where they get some afternoon shade. This keeps the leaves looking fresher and prevent them from burning. In cooler zones, they can be planted in full sun. They like humus rich soil with good winter drainage. Mulch in the winter for protection and to prevent roots from heaving. Divide every three years to prevent crowding and to make more plants for your garden.
