French Pussy Willow – (salix caprea) – A fast growing upright flowering shrub or small tree grown for its silvery pink fuzzy catkins that appear early spring. Grown mostly for its production of cut branches for forcing indoors or flower arrangements. Leaves are medium green above and grey below, turning yellow before dropping in the fall. Soft fuzzy buds are produced late winter/early spring along the shiny bare twigs. An easy to grow, multi-stemmed shrub that likes moist soil and full sun. Even though that is the desired environment for the French Pussy Willow, they will adapt to most type of soils and even partial sun. Stems remain colorful when dormant which makes the French Pussy Willow a beautiful specimen as a backdrop to any landscape.
Plants benefit from regular pruning shortly after blooming. Flowers form on the previous season’s growth instead of new growth so it is important to prune after flowers have faded. Prune the lowest branches back to the trunk and then prune for desired shape. The will also benefit from being pruned back to a six inch stump every couple of years. Severe pruning allows for larger catkins and longer stems.
Hardy in zones 4-9, they can grow 10 – 20 feet tall if left unpruned.
