Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) are ornamental shrubs with brilliant foliage colors ranging from dark red / burgundy to bright chartreuse gold. Barberry plants are a low maintenance, easy to grow shrub that are drought tolerant and deer resistant. Plant in full sun for brightest colors but they will also tolerate shade. Barberry plants are beautiful but have sharp little protective thorns lining their branches. Often used as a deterrent to trespassers when planted as a barrier hedge or under a window.
Crimson Pygmy Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) is a compact plant which will only grow to about 1 1/2 to 2 feet high and wide making it perfect to fit about anywhere with its small size and hardy nature. Purplish-red foliage covers the shrub throughout the season with red-brown stems. Small yellow blossoms appear in spring with red berries appearing in fall.
