Dappled Willow

The Dappled Willow is grown as a colorful shrub or small tree and  gaining in popularity for home landscaping with their beautiful tri colored leaves and graceful arching form.

A member of the Willow family, they are native to Korea and Japan where they are known to grow along river banks.  This is a graceful shrub with four seasons of interest.  In spring, small yellow 1 inch catkins appear – usually in April or May.  Then salmon color leaf buds appear and opening to reveal 4 inch narrow light green leaves that change to pink, cream and green variegated leaves.  This variegation gives the shrub a dappled look.  Leaves of the Dappled Willow will turn yellow in the fall before falling from the stems in October/November.  The stems will turn red during  winter which continues to add color and interest to your garden.

Grow the Dappled Willow  (salix integra ‘Hakuro-hishiki’) in full to part sun  with full sun bringing out the best colors.  They are tolerated of wet soil, erosion, and black walnut.  Dappled Willows are deciduous (loose leaves during winter) and grow 4-6 feet high and wide but can be pruned to maintain desired height.  Pruning should be done during the dormant months of winter and should be pruned hard for fuller shape and brighter colors.  They are fast growing and will add color/interest to any landscape.

Because they are a member of the willow family, it is not recommended planting them near water or septic lines.

Zones 5-7      Full to Part Sun     4-6 ft tall and wide
